BURNET - The Burnet County Commissioners Court will welcome the beginning of the new fiscal year with a burst of activity and schedule changes this week.
As Fiscal Year 2007-2008 gets under way Monday, the Commissioners will review requests for $20,000 left over from a $50,000 grant the Lower Colorado River Authority has made available to the county for June flood recovery assistance.
The workshop on the LCRA grant starts 10 a.m. Monday in the Burnet County Courthouse Room 203. The commissioners will take no action during the workshop.
Weeks ago, LCRA officials stipulated the grant must benefit the public and not be set aside for private reimbursement. Eligible applicants for the grant could include property owner associations, subdivisions and other groups, they added.
Last August, the commissioners directed LCRA officials to pay $30,000 to the city of Granite Shoals to expedite the removal of algae, duckweed, mulch, logs and other debris left by the June flood at several coves. Granite Shoals Mayor Frank M. Reilly and a group of concerned residents told the commissioners some of the debris piled 8 inches deep and stretched over a mile on top of the water.
“It’s going to be a long, long process,” Granite Shoals Park Manager Terry Hartman said of the debris cleanup.
On Tuesday, the commissioners plan to vote on what group or groups will receive the remaining $20,000 of the LCRA grant.
Also on Tuesday, the commissioners will begin holding their regular sessions at 9 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the courthouse main courtroom. Their special sessions will be 9 a.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month in the main courtroom.
Earlier this month, Burnet County Judge Donna Klaeger said the shift would help the commissioners avoid scheduling conflicts with Judge Randy Savage, who presides over the County Court-at-Law. Also during October, Klaeger said she would begin presiding over some arraignment hearings to assist Savage with a heavy trial schedule.
Besides the workshop slated for Monday, the commissioners will hold two other workshops during October.
The commissioners will conduct a workshop on future transportation issues 8:30 a.m. Oct. 17 in Burnet at the Burnet meeting room, 303 E. Jackson St. On Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. in the meeting room, the commissioners will hold another workshop to discuss legislative issues with Texas District 54 state Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock.
Besides meetings and workshops, the commissioners also expect to attend an address by Jack Colley from the state Emergency Management Division 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Lakeside Pavilion, 307 Buena Vista Drive in Marble Falls.
