LLANO - The Llano Independent School District board has named a replacement for president Alan Geistman, who stepped down because he is moving out of the area.
Trustees this week elected Ronnie Rudd, a board member since 2005.
Superintendent Dennis Hill said the board is now seeking a qualified applicant to fill Geistman’s vacant seat. The term expires in 2009.
Appointing a candidate is the best option for now, Hill said.
“The law, as it relates to a board vacancy, stipulates if there’s more than a year left on the vacant seat, than you have to fill the vacancy within 180 days that the vacancy occurs,” Hill said.
In addition to an appointment, another option involved holding a special election, with the winner serving out the remainder of Geistman’s term.
The election would have to be cleared by the U.S. Department of Justice, and there isn’t enough time to do that by Nov. 6, Election Day.
The next available election date is in May 2008, which is past the deadline to fill Geistman’s seat.
“Due to timing, they only had one option,” Hill said. “And that was to appoint somebody to serve until the May election.”
The board appointed a selection committee to collect applications from those interested in serving. The committee will rank the applicants and pass those on to the full board. Trustees will interview the finalists and select a new board member by the next regular meeting Nov. 29, Hill said.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 18 years old by the first day of the term to be filled, mentally competent and not have any felony convictions that haven’t been pardoned or released.
Applicants also must live in the Llano ISD area for six months and in Texas for one year prior to the day of appointment. Applicants must also be qualified and registered voters.
Those interested can apply by submitting a letter of interest and statement of qualifications to Gena Schuessler, Llano ISD, 200 East Lampasas, Llano, TX 78643. Applications must be received by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
