ROUND ROCK - The Marble Falls High School band walked away this past weekend from the University Interscholastic League Region 26-AAAA Marching Contest with a Division I superior rating.
The rating from all three judges Oct. 20 means the band has qualified to move on to the next level of competition. The weekend event was held at the Round Rock Independent School District stadium.
“The band did really well,” said head band director Brad Behrens. “We (the directors) are all very proud of the band, and very impressed with the way the work ethic improved the week before the contest.”
The band’s half-time show this year is “Chronicles,” written by Sean Wagoner. The show is broken up into five movements including “Determination,” “Contemplation,” “Revolution,” “Purification” and “Resolution.”
The show features several tempo changes and some difficult marching moves, instructors said.
The band has been learning and perfecting the show since Aug. 1, when summer band practice started. In addition to working during the class period every day, band members have spent extra time at the stadium polishing the show.
In all, the band has spent more than 60 hours practicing the performance, officials said. The band will continue refining the show for area competition Saturday.
“We’re going to have to work just as hard as last week. Letting up on our work schedule won’t help us any,” said Behrens. “We need to clean up our playing, namely tuning, releases and phrase endings.”
Behrens also believes the competition won’t get any easier.
“I expect the other bands in this area to be every bit as prepared as the other bands in our region and more,” Behrens said.
The band did make some much-needed improvements Oct. 20, the director said.
“We improved much on our playing and several sections improved on their marching,” said Behrens. “I expect us to perform better and march better than last week.”
The band will be competing in the UIL Area 4 Marching Contest Saturday at the Hays Independent Stadium in Buda. A performance time is pending.
