BERTRAM - Less than one week after Rich Elasser announced his resignation as Burnet Middle School principal, the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District board has approved a replacement.

During a special meeting Monday at Bertram Elementary School, Superintendent Jeff Hanks recommended the board appoint Mindy Evans to succeed Elasser.

Evans has been an administrative assistant to Elasser for nearly two years at the middle school, Hanks said.

“She has done a great job for us,” the superintendent added.

The board members accepted the recommendation from Hanks unanimously and without discussion. No other items were on the special meeting agenda.

The school has an enrollment of more than 760 students, officials said.

“I’m excited,” Evans told The Daily Tribune. “Burnet Middle School has a lot of great teachers and excellent students.”

Before coming to Burnet, Evans completed several years in the Pasadena Independent School District near Houston as a principal and educator.

Evans was principal of the Jackson Intermediate Middle School for one year in the Pasadena ISD, as well as assistant principal at Miller Intermediate Middle School for four years. Also, Evans taught English and special education courses at J. Frank Dobie High School for five years.

Evans graduated from the University of Houston with degrees in English and history. Also, she holds a master of science degree in educational management from the University of Houston at Clearlake.

Evans is married to Brad Evans, a deputy with Llano County Sheriff’s Office.

Last week, Elasser told officials he was leaving the middle school to accept a position with the Region VIII Education Center in Austin. He worked for the district since 1998.

His ex-wife, Dayna Jean Elsasser, a former cross country coach and English teacher, was indicted in March on a second-degree felony charge of an improper relationship between an educator and a student. She has a court date set for Nov. 27, according to documents.
