AUSTIN - A Sunrise Beach man is facing parole violation charges after he was arrested in a statewide online sex offender sting.
David Waller McDaniels, 41, was arrested Sept. 18 by officers from Attorney General Greg Abbot’s Cyber Crimes and Fugitives task force, officials said Friday.
McDaniels, a registered sex offender, is charged with violating the terms of his probation after being accused of creating a MySpace.com profile. He was convicted of indecent exposure in Harris County in 1984.
Abbot’s sting netted 14 arrests statewide, according to a press release.
“These arrests are a stark reminder for parents whose children use social networking sites,”Abbott said. “Each of the 14 convicted sex offenders was arrested for illegally using MySpace.com to establish an online presence. All Texans must remain vigilant about dangers posed by online sex predators.”
Abbot in May supoenaed the popular networking Web site, requiring them to release subscriber information of all registered sex offenders with online member profiles.
“By sharing a user profile database with law enforcement, MySpace.com is providing critical information to law enforcement,” Abbot said. “Other social networking sites should follow MySpace.com’s lead, partner with law enforcement, and help protect their online users from criminals who use the Internet to prey on children.”
McDaniels was taken to the Llano County Jail, where he was later released on bond. He is listed on the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Sex Offender Registry as living at an Austin address, though he now resides in Sunrise Beach, according to Llano sheriff’s records.
